I’ve created a 30-minute course on how to draw and color characters in Photoshop.
Links to the individual movies if you lose track of youtube’s wonky playlist:
1: INTRODUCTION
An overview of the software and process of drawing.
2: DRAWING
The gesture line is tied down, then cleaned up.
3: COLORING
Using masks to apply colors / solid fills.
4: INKING
Adding color to the lines using a non-destructive mask layer, making the inking process very simple and easy to alter.
5: SHADOWS & HILITES
Gradients and transparent layers are used to add lighting effects like shadows and hilites, using different blend modes.
6: SMUDGE TOOL
A painterly effect is achieved using the smudge tool; with the right smudge brush, nice natural media effects are possible.
7: DISTORT & WARP
Warps can be applied to the final art to adjust the post, saving time.
8: SMART OBJECTS
If you need to create crowds or other scenes with multiple variants of one object, OR to be able to resize / scale your art non-descructively, smart objects are essential.
