Movies in my LYNDA/LINKEDIN-LEARNING ‘Tips & Tricks’ series covering squash & stretch, assembled into a ‘virtual’ course. BTW, check out my patreon, there’s going to be a lot of animation resources posted there!
1: SQUASH & STRETCH
Basic intro to squash & stretch – the degree of squash and stretch has a direct effect on how cartoony or realistic your animation is.
2: BOUNCING BALL
Application of squash & stretch applied to the classic bouncing ball animation.
3: SQUASHING THE FACE
Traditional animators were told to make dialog ‘chewy’. Squashing the jaw portion of the face is one key element of this. Note the lack of squash and stretch on the skull!
4: SQUASHING BODIES IN RUNS
Squash & stretch the torso in a run to create this simple but effective four-legged run cycle. Think of it also as expansion and contraction.
5: A STRETCHY JUMP
Different degrees of squash and stretch on this body jump convey the different anatomical properties – the skull has little or no squash, whereas the more flexible torso has a lot.
6: SQUASHING OBJECTS
Animation of inanimate objects often requires squash and stretch – a Fantasia style broom is a good example.

For more courses there’s a masterlist of classes, covering traditional principles as well as how to animate in Photoshop, Flash-AnimateCC, Harmony and After Effects. For new movies dealing with the free design/animation app KRITA, subscribe to my youtube channel and check out my patreon!
