Really nice overview / review of the free animation software ‘GREASEPAINT/BLENDER‘ by Toniko Pantoja. I’m too far gone to spend time re-learning a new app, but might give it a go if I was 25 years younger. Definitely not quite as nice as TVPaint for 2D animation, but still some really impressive stuff possible, and I love the fact that it’s open source and free (as I detest the monthly subscription model now in use, especially by Adobe).
Speaking of free, I installed Ubuntu Linux on an old machine a few days ago, and it works great. Last time I used Ubuntu was about 10 years ago, and it has really improved; the experience for a command-line phobe like me is much easier. The od machine is probably not fast enough to run the latest Blender (as it didn’t like the video editor ‘DaVinci Resolve’), but still, a nice little project on a less old machine would be to get an Ubuntu / Blender / DaVinci / Krita system running.
BTW, a friend who works at a large animation studio in Ireland tells me they’re leaning more toward the free software, as they don’t want to be gouged by the monthly licence fee scam – so expect to see these programs more in demand as belts tighten.
NOTE: the top video below jumps directly to Toniko’s summary, but do scrub to the start to see the whole thing if you’re interested.
